RFF Digital Platforms Project

RFF Digital Platforms Project

To achieve the ambitious goal of increasing rail freight’s modal share to 30% by 2030, European Rail Freight Operators, united under the Rail Freight Forward (RFF) initiative, are driving a strategic transformation. A key component of this effort is the development of Digital Platforms to enable seamless rail freight transport across Europe.

The open European Digital Ecosystem will facilitate efficient information exchange among rail freight partners through non-commercial platforms, supporting flawless end-to-end transport and advancing freight automation.

Project Objectives

  • Enhanced Coverage: Gradually integrate all railway undertakings (RUs), with a focus on including small and mid-sized operators.
  • Accessible Data and Tools: Provide convenient, compliant access to high-quality data and digital products.
  • Innovation for Competitiveness: Foster innovation to ensure the rail sector’s long-term competitiveness.

RailData is playing a pivotal role in the project, leading the RFF Digital Platforms Architecture Workstream.

Q1 2021 Priorities

The project team focused on developing four key capabilities:

  • Data Quality: Enhancing the quality of ISR, ORFEUS, H30, and WPM data as a starting point.
  • Expanded Coverage: Incorporating small and medium-sized RUs into data exchange processes.
  • Technical Assessment: Evaluating the future digital platform from a technical perspective.
  • Smart Services Identification: Defining innovative services to support the ecosystem.

The team has made significant progress, delivering promising results in these areas. Stay tuned for further updates as RailData continues to drive digital innovation in the rail freight industry!
